President Donald Trump is unveiling plans for a massive steel plant in Iowa. The White House calls it the largest in American history. This project promises 1,750 permanent jobs for the state.
It is a major win with midterms just over a month away. The investment totals roughly $15 billion. This money will bring heavy manufacturing back to the U.S. The first phase creates 5,000 to 6,000 construction jobs.
These are immediate opportunities for local workers. Trump will announce this from the Oval Office on Monday. Executives from Mesabi Metallics will stand beside him.
The company will use iron ore from its new mine. That mine is located in Minnesota. The Iowa plant is expected to produce 7.5 million tons annually.
Eventually, it will reach 10 million tons per year. This output equals one-tenth of last year’s total U.S. production. It creates a fully domestic supply chain.
The iron ore travels from Minnesota to Iowa. This keeps critical materials within American borders. The timeline is long, however.
Mesabi does not expect steel until 2030. This patience is part of the strategy. Trump uses these investments to show policy results.
His tariffs aim to keep factories here. He doubled steel tariffs to 50% last year. This protects domestic producers from cheap foreign goods.
It also raises costs for steel consumers. Prices for iron and steel rose 10.4% recently. The steel mill products index climbed 13.3%.
Production increased despite these higher costs. The Minnesota mine has faced past hurdles. It took nearly two decades to reach this point.
Financing problems and missed deadlines plagued the project. Essar Steel filed for bankruptcy in 2016. It emerged as Mesabi Metallics later.
Now, mining and commissioning work have begun. Commercial pellet production targets late 2026. The mine will create 350 permanent jobs.
The White House highlights national security benefits. The plant will make high-grade defense steel. This strengthens supply chains for the military.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will attend the event. Export-Import Bank Chairman John Jovanovic will be there too. Mesabi executives Rewant Ruia and Joe Broking will join.
The first phase represents nearly $18 billion total. It includes both the mine and the plant. The White House estimates $95 billion in economic activity.
This covers construction and the first decade. It is the first mega-steel plant since the 1960s. Most new facilities use smaller electric arc furnaces.
This integrated facility is different. It signals a return to large-scale industry. The administration says this restores competitiveness.
It secures trillions in new investment. The money trail shows clear intent. Private capital meets public policy goals.
The result is a rebuilt industrial base. The steel will be made in Iowa. The ore will be mined in Minnesota.
The profits will stay in the U.S.
